Title of work Possible effort
Concept of the work Both developed countries and developing countries provide support hand in hand. Vaccine support can help protect the lives of many from various diseases. However, as vaccines are heat-labile and must be kept under low temperature, refrigerating equipment is essential in vaccine support.
I propose making a refrigerator using core units manufactured in developed countries and an exterior made of local sun-dried bricks. By down-sizing packages exported from developed countries, cost reduction can be achieved and the limited funds can be used to benefit more people. Sun-dried bricks have highly thermal insulating properties and can be easily manufactured in developing countries using local materials and technologies, which helps create employment and promote independence. In addition, the manufacturing and deposing processes of sun-dried bricks have very minor impact on the environment. As the refrigerator is man-powered, it is compatible for developing countries where power outage often occurs.
Although saving and protecting the future is an ambitious goal, I believe that it can be achieved if each person makes an effort to perform actions which are possible for their position. I hope that my work will aid in such efforts.
Judge's Comment It is a very good idea to make the exterior from local sun-dried bricks and to create a nonelectric product in which internal cooling is achieved through winding by hand. However, this device alone is not a realistic solution to problems. Even if a vaccine is available, functionality is not possible without doctors who will inject and administer that vaccine and without the establishment of medical clinics and other appropriate facilities. I hope that the designer will give further consideration to a method of comprehensive support.
