International New Designers Workshop 2010
The Connected within the Disconnected | Nagoya Discovered through Design

This is the tenth anniversary of the International New Designers Workshop. Reviewing the Nagoya Design Do! 2010: Design to Empower Tomorrow, we realized that issues in society that at first glance seem isolated and disconnected are, in fact, connected, and generate a huge flow. How can we provide continuity among these various objects, events, history and culture surrounding us? And what with what kind of mechanism could we transmit this continuity? Workshop directors and participants, by taking a broad definition of design, will explore through fieldwork the theme gThe Connected within the Disconnectedh.
In their final presentation to the audience, including businesses and representatives of the City of Nagoya, each team will make a proposal for the realization of its project.

International New Designers Workshop 2008
ROOTS FINDER DESIGN DNA

This year's Workshop is our first event as part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network*, to which the City of Nagoya was appointed in October, 2008. This year's workshop will include participants from other UNESCO Creative Cities, such as Kobe, Japan; Santa Fe, USA and Aswan, Egypt; as well as from a candidate city: Shenzhen, China. Students and young designers from around the world will strive to understand cultural diversity and approach indigenous design by working to visualize the charm of Nagoya. By integrating design and manufacturing skills, involving local industries, they will challenge themselves to create brand value based on indigenous identities.

How will we be able to produce and enhance our own distinctive cultural identity? Students and young designers from Japan and abroad will explore, reinterpret and redefine unique features found in Nagoya, and come up with a solution to an innovative type of souvenir, a Nagoya brand, or a portrayal of Nagoyafs culture.

The final presentation on the results from this workshop will be delivered at the International Design Center NAGOYA.
Date : December 6, 2008. Registration is now open! Admission free. >>For more information.

To commemorate this special occasion, a joint exhibition featuring selected projects by invited past participants The International New Designers Workshop and a series of relay talks and roundtable discussions will also be organized this winter to provide a platform for these young talents from around the world to tell us how they use their creative visions to impact the social fabric and improve everyday life.
Around 24 creators from 16 countries will be invited for the commemorative exhibition this year. In addition, an international conference will be organized for the industries, the creative community, the governments and the general public to converge and exchange ideas on January 21-22,2007.
Entitled,"The Social Designers: design for real needs", the exhibition will tell the story of how our young generation have the power and passion to apply their skills to make a difference in our everyday life. Brought forth by a global perspective of communication and intentions that go further than a surface to tackle deeply rooted social issues, we hope the innovative propositions that are presented here by these designers will demonstrate how we can use design for real needs. Details of the exhibition, the roundtable sessions and the IdcN 10th Anniversary Commemorative Conference will be updated as we progress with preparations for these events. >>For more information.
