IEM Symposium cum International New Designers Workshop 2003
Challenges in the Educational Environment of Design

As the world’s first convergence of 68 universities from 5 continents to build a new bridge for the academic circles of international design, this project includes a symposium, workshops, and exhibitions that focuses on how to deal with current problems facing design schools. The goal is to provide an opportunity to re-evaluate and revamp the curriculum in order to properly prepare students for future challenges, and to create a worldwide network of educational institutions for design.

Participants concluded that though they came from very different cultural environments, current graphic design programs had very much in common. We identified common challenges that need to be tackled: how to preserve the local cultural context, how to deal with accelerating globalization, ever-evolving technology and faculty development; how to nurture students’ skills, and how to efficiently archive design research/design history materials.
