Honorable Mention [Tomoko Azumi's prize]

TitleF Family Rice Ball

Concept: In this video, "The Family Rice Ball," I introduce the similarities and differences in ways of making rice balls. The recipe for rice balls is not acquired from a recipe book. Being passed down face-to-face, from mother to children, it is a recipe in which bodily senses are very important. As the person learning the recipe and their subsequent living environments are different, the way of making rice balls, and also the taste, changes. The idea of this work is to look at the relationship within a family by examining these similarities and differences.

Judge's Comments: The motif of the "onigiri" rice ball incorporates a cultural background that is extremely familiar to us Japanese. This distinctive video work is very interesting, examining from a variety of angles the issue of how families carry on--or don't carry on--the tradition of shaping rice balls. The sense of three-dimensionality is expressed in a very rhythmical and breezy manner. While only females in the family were selected for this work, I'd like to see any subsequent work include males, and for men to be a part of continuing food culture in the 21st century.
