Report: Nagoya, UNESCO City of Design Promotion Projects FY 2013

In response to Nagoya’s declaration as a City of Design in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), International Design Center facilitates networking among certified cities and publicizes design activities taking place in Nagoya.
In 2013, we expanded international exchange, human resource cultivation, cooperation and education among industry, government and academia, and design education. We participated actively in exchanges among member cities, beginning with the annual general meeting held in Bologna, and including mayoral level meetings in Beijing, and an international meeting of representatives of the design cities at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, as well as sub-network meetings in Shenzhen and Seoul. In addition, Nagoya was invited to participate in a design event in Graz, and thanks to the new viewpoint generated by the exchanges between students of Nagoya and Graz, on display were not only examples of products and graphic design, but also the rich personality of the Nagoya region, with a focus on history and culture.
As a cooperative project with the Aichi Triennale 2013, there was a student competition in which three official products were chosen for production and sale. And the Campus Art & Design Tour, highlighting the historical buildings that are some of Nagoya’s assets, served to express the charm of the city from the point of view of design.
